Went to Binghamton this weekend to visit grad-school boy and see a minor league (AHL) hockey game wherein I rediscovered - and the wife discovered (since she had never attended a minor league game) - the joys of an $18 game ticket as opposed to one costing 10x as much in Montreal (NHL). Not to mention the fact that 2 minor league beers, aka - hockey water, can be had for less than 1/2 the cost of 1 big league beer.

It's probably time that we start considering attending some AHL games in Albany (when the "Baby" Pens are in town). Albany and the Albany Devils are only a 2 hour drive away and for the same cost, or less, as 2 tickets to an NHL game in Montreal (when the Pittsburgh Pens are in town), we can see a game, have dinner, and stay overnight in a hotel in Albany.

In any event, the only real downside to attending the game in Binghamton this past weekend was that there was another game going on that we missed.

civilized ku # 828 ~ imagine that

As I mentioned recently, one of my goals for 2011 is to get my pictures seen.

Obviously, the ultimate seen-ness is gallery exhibits but what I primarily mean by "seen" is getting the work in front of the eyes of gallery owners / directors with book publishers as another possibility. Just a few weeks into the new year and it seems that my objective is gathering mass like a snowball rolling down a snow covered slope.

In addition to yesterday's mention of the interest in magazine publication of my Forks pictures, while I was busy working away on the prep for the Forks gallery exhibit, I received an email that read (in part) ....

... The Gallery Committee met to review the artwork submitted for the 2011-2012 gallery schedule, and we are pleased to announce that your work has been chosen for a group exhibition at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts. This show will be called “IMPACT” Our Changing Environment. We will ask each selected artist to choose 2-3 framed photographs that relate to the environment for the exhibit. We would ask you to send work that you submitted about the Adirondacks without the APA.

FYI, the requested work, "work that you submitted about the Adirondacks without the APA", is the previously posted Without the APA picture.

After submitting my signed exhibition contract to the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, I received a followup email that stated (in part) ...

I am so glad to hear that you can participate in this show, in part, I was inspired by your theme for this exhibit. I look forward to working with you ...

Imagine that. My picture(s) engendered inspiration. Hot damn. Imagine that. And, best of all, I did without pandering to the pretty picture crowd.

If this keeps up I may have to change my name from The Landscapist to The Exhibitionist.

FYI ~ my exhibit artist's statement

Just thought you might be interested.

And, yes, I'm working on the online exhibit gallery but that gallery is going to have quite a few more Forks pictures than the exhibit had. That's because I received an email today that stated (in part) ...

...Kelly at ADK Life asked if you could drop off a copy of your exhibit book to Adirondack Life Magazine... she would like to show editors and pursue a PHOTO featured article on the Forks with your images. She says until now, they have never done a story on the Forks because there isn't much of interest to do it on, but your images would work well.

FYI ~ discursive promiscuity redux

Last Saturday afternoon while my friend from NYC and I were hanging out in the gallery, he mentioned that it must have been time consuming and challenging to have hanged - placement, position, arrangement, juxtaposition, etc. - the pictures on the wall. In fact, that was not the case.

Because we were hanging prints right up to show time, and despite my assistant's pleas, I was just hanging the prints in no particular order with the idea that once they were on the wall, I could take the time to arrange them. Unfortunately, once the print were all on the wall, the gallery goers started pouring in. Consequently the center wall prints never got "arranged"(the prints on the side walls did get arranged).

That said, when it was all said and done, I thought that the "random" arrangement worked rather well, at least nobody complained or, other than my friend, even mentioned the arrangement. It wasn't until my friend mentioned it, that I had a flashback to my idea of discursive promiscuity - an idea that I addressed in a blog entry 2 years ago.

Over time, that idea sort of went by the wayside. After spending some time with the center gallery wall, I think that I will have to rethink the idea. I liked it before. I like it even better now.

Several questions have been, re: my exhibit print mounting.

The exact proceedure started with 1/2" thick 28"×36" foamcore sheets cut to size. In my case, I got 4 12"×12" and 2 24"×24" boards from each sheets. Then the prints were spray mounted - Krylon Spray Adhesive is archival, acid-free, and non-yellowing - on each board and trimmed flush by cutting 1/4" from each side of the print/board sandwich.

I had a friend pre-make the wood backings which were made to have a 3/4"-1" setback from the print/board edges. These backs were attached to the foamcore board with spray adhesive. The backs provide stiffness / warp-resistance and a nice "floating" effect. If time had allowed, I would have stained the wood backs black.

All in all, this is very visually pleasing - no glass = no glare / reflections - and is very inexpensive as well. The only issue is surface protection. In order to address that issue, I am attending a Protect Your Prints seminar (Ken Allen Studios, Feb. 8, in Brooklyn) where, amongst other methods, spray coating technique will be addressed.

picture windows # 59 ~ on seeing

In addition to the fact that I am always looking for "picture windows" in order to add to my picture windows series (and a host of other factors), I made a picture of this window because my eye was "pricked" by the complimentary colors in the outside view with those on the interior view.

FYI, 3 exposures blended manually.

Yesterday, the wife and I, together with our 2 house guests, went up the hill to Asgaard Farm for some fresh eggs, feta goat cheese, and some grain-fed Angus tenderloins. The day was crisp, clear, and cold. We spend a very pleasant hour or so rambling around the farm. It was very enjoyable.

The dinner that followed was also very enjoyable, especially so because having 2 chicks (the wife + 1 house guest) and a gay guy (who is a NYC chef) around the house makes for great eating with very little involvement in the prep, cooking, and cleanup from me. Sitting around sipping some wine or a bourbon while others are busy as beavers is a very pleasant way of getting things done.

I must admit that I have given some thought to the idea of indentured servants.
