My wife says that if I were cheating on her, this would be the perfect excuse. Out every night once the baby goes down, for a few hours exploring more nightscapes. My alibi is always on the memory card. On this particular night, a tall, sexy, naked, tree and I had a little get together and to make my conscience even more guilty it happened in a dark alleyway.

I love the idea of mixing ambient natural light with human light sources. There is such a wealth of unphotographed vignettes hidden out there along the edge of darkness. I applaud the efforts made by those who venture out from the comforts of warm homes and glowing TVs.

This photo is a tad too contrasty for my eye, I want to see some detail (not much but more than presented) in the shadows. I think the 'edge of night' photography is a perfect place for HDR (high dynamic range) techniques. You want to capture the scene as your eye sees it and not be restircted by the limited tonal range of film or sensors. I think bracketed exposures and thoughtful blending of images in Photo Matix could take you places where only your eye goes now. Dawin

I've always enjoyed night scenes. Back when I used to prowl around the streets at night, I didn't have a tripod so I couldn't really get much that interested me. Hell, I didn't have a camera either! But this stuff is cool. The spotlight on the base of the tree is especially fine.

I disagree with Darwin - the photo is perfect as it is.

As for HDR, in my view forget about it, and just concentrate on taking good photos ;)
