Photographic truth and the real - so my question is, what's not true or a reflection/trace of the real here?...

I was thinking about that Dvorak article you linked to and it seems that when people talk about "truth" and whether there is truth in a photograph, there's some confusion between "the truthfulness of the photograph" and the assumptions of the viewer. As you pointed out the defining trait of photography is that it is a record of what was in front of the camera at a particular time, and it also presents emotional and other truths. But frequently when people look at a photograph they project some assumptions on it and then assume that it's "the truth", which can be problematic. Dvorak may have been better off saying "be careful what you assume", rather than "most photographs are fakes."

Just out of curiosity: in your previous post you mentioned
"photographers use this defining visual characteristic of the medium to create untruths." I'm not sure what you were getting at. What are the untruths you were thinking about when you made that statement?
