my response: Markus, I believe those are Magnolias. The picture dates from my trip to Pittsburgh in early September and, while their seasons lag behind ours and the elevation is much lower than here in the Adirondacks, I can't state whether or not they are still in bloom. I suspect not.

The combination of shapes is intriguing here, especially the introduction of urban high-risers versus the organic forms of the trees and the path.
Mark, here in Bavaria (already in an alpine valley) magnolias are clearly springtime-only blossomers, therefore my astonishment. The rest of the year we see only green leaves on them.
