This blog is intended to showcase my pictures or those of other photographers who have moved beyond the pretty picture and for whom photography is more than entertainment - photography that aims at being true, not at being beautiful because what is true is most often beautiful..

So many words, so much totally useless crap - The Two-Lens Kit: The Mike Version (Part I)", and, The Two-Lens Kit: The Mike Version (Part II).

Add to those words all those from the 175 reader comments .....

Does anyone out there find this stuff interesting / helpful in any way?

Reader Comments (15)

Why would you not find it interesting?

May 24, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Apparently the 175 commenters felt that it is interesting and important, at least to them. Is it any less interesting than the details of you health? There has to be a place at the table for everyone, but one does not need to hear it all.

I have long been curious about your gear. How are you getting a square format?

P.S. Best wishes on the health front.

The comments got to be a little tedious after a while so I stopped reading them. I'm always interested in what Mike has to say. Not all of it has the same depth. Who scores every time they touch the puck or hits a homerun or ... You get the idea. I know the gear content isn't exactly your cup of tea.

Oh and re your previous post: I hope your personal medicinal regime isn't screwing up the prescription regime.

It's entertaining, nothing more, nothing less. And it's a conversation, and yes I find Mike's two-lens post interesting, though the comments less so. History, background, context. He picked up on a pattern and discussed it.

If you don't like to watch then change the channel.

Glad your health is improving. And I thought it was red wine that was supposed to be a heart health wonder drug...don't you guys make that in NY?

Honestly, I found it a wall of text. Something about manual transmissions (which are fun if you don't have to drive in stop and go traffic all the time), and something about pancake lenses (which I suppose have their use).

Ever get the idea that some are so far off the trail hat a GPS will never bring them back?

I've been reading Mike Johnston's articles and musings for the past 20 years or so. He has a solid background in the arts and has chosen to write about photography, cameras and other assorted topics, some related, some not. He even wrote about buying a car once. Imagine that.

I like Mike. Even met him once at a NYC photo equipment expo (he was with Camera and Darkroom then). His writings reveal a pretty normal guy who happens to be a consummate gentleman and has much to offer. Not of interest to you? Fine. Worthy of the comments you led off with? Nope. Mike would never have done that.

I started reading it in the hope it might go somewhere deeper, but it's simply a "gear" post.

Judging by the number of responses there are a lot of people who need guidance on which lens[es] to carry or like telling everyone what they are using. So Mike's post struck a chord with some of his readership which is all good.

Mark, I notice you have a few readers asking about the "equipment" re square format. I shoot rectangles then crop to a square if it works for the image (I don't look for "square" images). This approach is obvious to me but others might be thinking the process is something more complicated.

We're all at different stages and perhaps some people rather be told something than spend time experimenting.

Wow, how hilarious blog-catty of you!

Mike doesn't constantly grind stupid axes and writes in much better than you do. That's why his blog is more popular. In addition to the fact that he writes about stuff in which people hold at least a passing interest.

Well, I made a comment there, although quite late (with dozens of comments already), and Mike even responded to that comment (about Finnish car drivers). He makes quite an effort on his site, and even though the original topic may be gear-related, he usually goes much beyond.

Here, I come for the photographs.

Different strokes - that's all. Equipment is what makes photography possible and we all obsess about it one way or another. While some have wet dreams about classic Zeiss lenses I long for the point-ans shoot-medium-format-digital-Kodak-Instamatic-like-pancacke-zoom-full-auto-one-button-mini-camera that just captures a perfectly exposed brilliantly sharp and detailed 65MP file of whatever I point that camera at.

I would like for you to hire a cartoonist to draw a panel of you shaking your fist, eyes bugging out, TOP on your computer screen and you shouting "that darned Mike Johnston!"You could put it up with every post you write about his site. That would awesome because that's what I imagine in my head every time I read one of these posts.
