how well do x-country skis take to walking through the dirt rather than snow?
Gordon - once the snow comes in earnest, there'll be lots of it in the tunnel.
Put next to your river bridge, this is another cross-climate comparison like your trees. The large stones bring to mind the Lion Gate of Mycenae--though this is a few shades more humble.
