man & nature # 49 ~ icing on the autumnal cake

Ice, snow, and a ray of sunshine on Whitefaceclick to embiggen
Last Friday morning we were greeted with this frosty visage on Whiteface Mountain - albeit that this picture was made late Friday afternoon.

This is not exactly an uncommon time of year for this to appear. In fact, it's rather "normal" but that fact never seems to lessen the impact that summer and a relatively mild autumn are nearing the end. A few days of sunshine and mid 50 - mid 60 degree weather are in the forecast although no one around here is fooled by that treat.

It's already dark by 7PM and the daylight hours are getting shorter and shorter. No doubt about it, that white stuff will be visiting us all soon enough.

Me, I'm looking forward to it.

Same here near Vienna, Austria. We're as far North as Montreal so you can get an idea of how dark it gets here. My wife comes from Scotland (latitude 55°45') and in December the daylight hours are something like 0930 - 1500. Makes me want to stay home by the fire.

Left the house to the first dark morning of the season today. Weekend was the first that I needed a (light) jacket.

Love today's photo - sums up all the subtle weather and colour effects that I like about this time of year. How do you get the clouds to look like that (i.e. perfectly natural)? Doesn't seem to matter what I do (or don't) making photographic skies look natural is an art unto itself.

I was up in Jerich/Underhill this past weekend at the Firing Range and thought I saw a touch of snow on Mansfield when it cleared off in the afternoon. It is getting to be that time when the snow flies, isn't it!
