Long Lake Motel phone booth ~ Long Lake, NY - in the Adirondack PARK • click to embiggen
I'm back.

Last week, I mentioned that one the best seen/scene things (up to that point) on our Adirondack getaway was a phone booth. Well, here it is.

Other than seeing a phone booth - they have become increasingly rare - this booth was impressive in both its setting and its seat. In addition, when seen at night, it glows like a lighthouse beacon in the surrounding darkness in which sits. Altogether, it's quite a sight.

An another interesting thing - although many would call it an annoying thing - is that, once you venture beyond the "big" tourist towns of Lake Placid and a few others, very few motels, hotels, resorts, rental cabins, and the like have phones (other than in the check-in office). More and more, they have Wi-Fi, but phones are not part of the experience.

And, just to make it even more interesting, throughout most of the Adirondack Park, there is no cell coverage.

We saw lots of deer, bear and moose during our getaway. These particular specimens were located in the hamlet of Long Lake.

Waterfront property for sale ~ Wanakena, NY - in the Adirondack PARK • click to embiggen
For 4 days, we stayed in a waterfront camp/cottage in Wanakena. After 5-6 days of rain - one of which was monsoon-like rain - the camp/cottage became more and more "waterfront" each day.

IMO, a trip through the central Adirondacks is not complete without a stop at The Eagle Bay Donut Shop. Their cinnamon donuts are to die for. The shop has been in business since 1966 and I've been eating their donuts since, you guessed it, 1966.

FYI, you know it's a great donut / fry cake when, before you have traveled a mile down the road with a bag of their fry cakes (just like grandma used to make), the bag becomes saturated with cooking fat/grease ... hey, I said they were to die for.
