FYI ~ new book

I am creating a book to accompany the life without the APA pictures in the IMPACT Our Changing Enviroment exhibit. Herein are the cover and a sample spread.

The spread pages will have the original un-"constructed" picture from which the life without the APA picture is derived. Those same originals, fading to white, also appear on the cover.

FYI, I am offering my sincerest thanks and apologies to Mr. Dickens.

civilized ku # 986 ~ made pictures

It has been stated that "constructed" pictures should have a disclaimer, re: as "made" pictures, in order to inform the viewer that the picture is not a straight picture.

IMO, that directive certainly applies to pictures such as my life without the APA pictures and other like pictures. However, also IMO, "constructed" / "made" pictures created in the manner of Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson, Aaron Hobson (aka: the Cimemascapist), et al, don't seem to required a disclaimer inasmuch as it should be very apparent - the telltale signs are rather obvious - the pictures are of staged events.

But what about portraits? What about still life? Does the viewer need to be informed the pictures are "constructed", not found? Is a portrait any less real because it is "posed"? Is a still life less than real because it is arranged?

Many of my still life pictures are actually found / straight pictures. As an example, the recent civilized ku # 981 ~ droppings and trimmings (and many others like it) is a found still life. I pictured the droppings and trimmings as they were on my kitchen counter.

However, many of my still life pictures are of the arranged variety - the Decay & Disgust series or today's strawberry detritus, as examples thereof.

Do I need to inform viewers the pictures are arranged?

FYI ~ I want one

Panasonic has announced a forthcoming (August) µ4/3 Leica Summilux 25mm f1.4 lens. I want one.

I have a 4/3 Zuiko 25mm f2.8 lens which, with an adapter, mounts on the EP-1. It will probably end up on eBay once the Leica Summilux lens becomes available. It is my fondest hope that the word "Leica" does not mean the lens will have a stupid price tag.

Saturday evening the wife and I attended a cowboy-themed fundraiser. The event was held in a barn on the Clinton County Fairgrounds. There were no horses, cattle, nor, thankfully, square dancing.

I'm off to the frame shop to drop off the life without the APA prints. IMnsHO, they look great.

On an interesting (to me) side note, apparently a few regional and connected visitors to The Landscapist have taken note of the life without the APA pictures and have spread the word. The recent the complete collection entry is getting lots of visits via Twitter, Facebook, and a few other Adirondack online forums.

One link stated: I just saw these on the ol Twitter feed, too good and thought provoking not to link to, enjoy! - exactly the response I was hoping for from this body of work.

Re: the life without the APA # 1-8 entry, Carolyn (no linked provided) asked: How will you display your wonderful images in the show?

Carolyn, thanks for the question and your great use of the word "wonderful". Comments / questions are always appreciated and compliments are as well.

Re; display - I have finally arrived at a very reasonable and a very good looking method of displaying my prints. A local framing shop will drymount the prints (24"×24") on acid free foamcore for the paltry fee of $20.00USD/each. Considering the hassle of doing it myself, this is a real bargain.

In addition to that bargain, I have found - at pictureframes.com - 24"×24" white metal frames (unassembled) with 3/8" face x 13/16" depth for only $15.84USD/each, hanging hardware and wire included. Together with the drymounting, the cost per print, ready to hang, is under $40.00USD. IMO, a very reasonable cost.

As is my wont, there will be no glazing.

The dummied-up picture accompanying this entry gives a pretty good idea what the end result will look like. As I always do, I will be picturing the actual installation for a look at the real thing. FYI, the white border around the image is not a mat - it is the paper white on the print.

civilized ku # 978 ~ aspect ratio

Re: on civilized ku # 974, John Linn wrote/asked:

Some subjects really demand certain aspect ratio treatments (rolling thunder being a good example), but beyond that what impact does format have on images?

To be honest, I have never really given any thought to "what impact does format have on images?" Although, at first blush, my reaction is, "none" that I, personally, am aware of. That is simply because I have no preference for one aspect ratio nor another when viewing the pictures of others, or, for that matter, my pictures.

That is not to say there is no sub-conscious affect. Undoubtedly, there is something, no matter how insignificant it might be, at work relative to picture aspect ratio. However, when I view pictures, as long as the picture, as presented, looks right, then whatever the aspect ratio is, it's just fine with me.

What I can say, re: aspect ratio, is that the pano aspect ratio feels very "expansive" to my eye and sensibilities. That feeling is undoubtedly due to the fact that I can not take in the entirety of the picture in a single glance. My eyes must scan the picture in order to see the whole thing.

Consequently, panoramics feel more "interactive" / "expansive", less "static" / "fixed" stare than conventional aspect ratio pictures. Neither better or worse than non-pano pictures, just different.

Although, that said, some picture making / pictures is/are better suited to the pano aspect ratio.
