My apologies to the tourists but, yesterday evening, I did get what I was hoping for - more rain.

As a chicken was roasting in the oven for dinner, I went out to the store, cameras in hand, to get some butter. At the time, it had been raining and was threatening more. So, with 25 minutes until the chicken was done, I moved about the area and made the pictures which are posted in this entry.

Within that 25 minute time frame, it was rather amazing, at least to me, the variety of light, cloud structure (or lack thereof), and general atmospheric conditions which the weather presented to me and my camera. I could have hung around and made even more pictures, but I didn't want to be late for dinner - a perfect example of real life getting the way of making pictures.

As mentioned in my recent entry, water, in one state or another, I have embarked upon making a rain-based body of work. However, it's not as though I have just recently discovered the idea / allure of making pictures in the rain (or rain like conditions) because, truth be told, over the past few years, I have made a number of rain type pictures. In fact, upon a rather thorough look through my picture files, I have more than enough such pictures - as an example, a few of which are posted in this entry - to easily make a 20 picture folio (my "standard" folio print number).

That said, I won't be making a rain pictures folio from my current collection any time soon. In a manner of speaking, I feel as though that would be a bit like "cheating", inasmuch as the pictures were not conceived and made with an intentional rain body of work / folio in mind. As strong as most of the pictures are, putting together a folio from my current collection would, IMO, be a lazy-ass way of doing it.

Not that I am theoretically opposed to creating a body of work / folio of pictures from an accumulation of "unfocused" but similarly themed pictures made over a protracted period of time. In my larger body of work - 4,000+ pictures and growing - there are many ongoing themes / related referents which were not initially envisioned as separate bodies of work. However, as time progressed and a number of referent-related themes produced a separate and substantial number of pictures, those themes became self-evident as stand alone bodies of work.

In the case of rain referent pictures, I really do not think that I have devoted nearly enough focused / concerted effort to the making of those pictures. At least not enough to justify a rain referent folio which represents my thorough and honest opinion, picture wise, on the subject. So, here I sit, rain gear at the ready, hoping for rain.

My apologies to all the Adirondack tourists hoping for sunny days.

<b<BTW, I'm curious - anyone else out there working on a body of work, intentionally or emergent?

I've been spending some time thinking about starting a new body of work. A number of possible picturing referents have come to mind but none have really lit my fire. Then, purely by happenstance, as Hugo was tossing rocks into the water during our recent wilderness canoe trek, thoughts of Harold E. "Doc" Edgerton and his milk drop pictures came to mind.

Next thing I know, I've got a camera in hand and Hugo's launching rocks for my picturing pleasure (3...2...1,throw). And, on one occasion, even wife got into the act.

Upon returning home and processing the splash pictures, it occurred to me that a picture series of splashes - like snowflakes, no two splashes are alike - all made in different bodies of water and different light conditions, would make a pretty darn interesting body of work. So, there, unbidden and unplanned, is a new picturing endeavor.

Then, last evening, during a torrential downpour, I stepped out on the porch and made a few pictures. Once again, it came to me that rain and the atmospheric light which comes with it would also make an interesting picture series. So, voila, there's another picturing endeavor to tackle.

Consequently, it would seem that there's a lot of water in my picturing future. Even though some might think I'm all wet, nevertheless, one might say, "when it rains it pours" (new bodies of work wise).

FYI, no multiple frame shooting technique was used in the making of the splash pictures and that's how I'll continue to make those pictures. I think that part of the picturing surprise / mystery of a splash is to capture them one frame / one splash at a time. So, while there will be a lot of water in my picturing future, I'll also be hauling around a lot of rocks.
